“This degreaser from Bare Bones Solutions has become our go to for degreasing. We’ve used it on about 30 different skulls including bears, cougars, coyotes, moose, deer and elk. We use around 60-80 grams of the solution per 5 gals of water and have noticed no major antler discolouration or bone damage. To be sure the solution was safe we even tested it at high temps and concentrations with positive results. I can’t say whether or not it is considerably faster as we haven’t done an appropriate test but it certainly doesn’t seem to add any time to the process. Regardless I don’t find the need to buy dish soap and ammonia anymore thanks to Bare Bones Solutions!”

Testimonials

“I've used the degreasing powder on about 10 skeletons so far and am very happy with the results! It's way faster than soap and ammonia, and works well on mammals, and birds. The fact that it's a powder makes it easy and convenient to use.”

“It is much better than Dish soap and ammonia!”

Jaclyn E, Taxidermist and Bone Artist, British Columbia

“Bare Bones Solutions degreaser has become my go-to for degreasing skulls. I was lucky enough to be a beta tester for this product, and I cleaned similar skulls side by side with my previous method of ammonia to compare its efficacy, with identical temps and frequency of water changes. It cut my degreasing time virtually in half versus the ammonia. Surprisingly, it also whitened the bones substantially, which I personally have never seen with any other degreasing method. I highly recommend this product for your degreasing needs!”

“What stands out the most is the time it takes to ooze out the grease, with Bare Bones it’s quick to see those floaties on top of that water. Compared to dish soap or Ammonia where it does take a few days before you even begin to see those floaties. I’m still amazed with the how little product a person actually uses compared to ammonia or dish soap. "

”I will never use another dose of ammonia for degreasing again”

“Having used it from the beginning it’s been a time saver. From 2-4 months on average down to 1-2 months sometimes quicker. Cheaper than using ammonia without the smell. Having cleaned approximately 300 various skulls with it so far no signs of damage makes it a game changer. The volume of powder in a pail lasted for all 300 skulls.”

Trent L, Saskatchewan

“This powder has been an absolute time saver, craft elevator, and gamechanger. I used to spend weeks - sometimes months - changing out washes of water and dish soap to degrease bones I was prepping, wondering when-oh-when I would actually be able to shift to the next stage of an art project... Within two cycles of use on a salvaged sheep skeleton (which I had been processing since spring with water still coming out clouded from grease) I was able to start pulling out completely degreased ribs, vertebrae, and jaw halves.

I later processed a collection of feline bones using the powder, seeing effective results in three weeks.

The powder is easy to mix into a stable solution, with no lingering odor in my workspace, unlike many other conventional options. I do room-temperature degreasing and the product works incredibly well even without the nudge of continual heat to push it along for even quicker timelines. Disposal of waste product after the fact is easy and low-key, as is cleanup of my work area - no lingering residue, scent, or stains in my plastic buckets and other receptacles.

Steve has also made himself a reliably available resource about the powder's properties, its best practices for use, and the sound science behind the chemical formula. He's an asset to this community and genuinely cares about serving the demands of both science and art. My bones are consistently and quickly coming out of the degreasing stage clean and undamaged, and I look forward to continuing my use of the Bare Bones degreasing powder for years to come!”
